A successful restaurant needs to rely on a team effort, but the main person behind a top quality restaurant is the chef or the team of chefs. The other important attribute of a successful restaurant is the management to make sure that everything is right all the time. The staff also need to be friendly and courteous to the customers, but also the venue has to allow the customers to be in the right mood of the experience of the meal. It is a very complex business and the best advertising for a restaurant is always word of mouth and recommendations from happy customers.
The term chef comes from the French word meaning chief or head person. They are the person that is in charge of the kitchen and in a restaurant will produce the menu and create the recipes. Much of a head chef's work is based around managing the kitchen staff and making sure the ingredients are available in the right quantities. Due to the fact that the menu is decided upon and created by the head chef the success of the restaurant can be credited to the chef. A chef will often have a number two chef who is known as the sous chef. They are the chief assistant to the head chef in a restaurant but in some larger kitchens there could be many sous chefs. There are many world famous chefs that have established a great reputation for fine food and have helped the rise of more top quality restaurants around the world.
